2017 Canewdon Closures

Canewdon Village Hall will be closed a few times this year and pretty much all of July, but fear-not, here are some suggestions for a leisure / training ride if you are not riding or marshalling the event in question. Remember, if you are going to watch a time trial or road-race, ride in the opposite direction to the racers. Racers are generally riding anti-clockwise so that they only encounter left turns - if you are riding the course, do so in the opposite direction and give encouragement to the racers. Always ask a marshall if you are unsure.

Sunday 5th February - Burnham & Baddow Cycle Challenge
All club members asked to support this event; a choice of unsupported 25mile or 60 mile routes from East Hanningfield to the Dengie peninsular.

Sunday April 30th - ECCA Festival
Canewdon Village Hall is closed today as members are encouraged to enter a festival event. Festival Details
If you find that you are missing your Sunday ride then you can always sign up for the Festival Audax on Monday and earn the club some points...

Sunday 14th May - Club Hilly Time Trial
This event is based at South Hanningfield and the racers ride 2 or 3 laps (depending on age) from South Hanningfield down to Rettendon Common, turning left onto the A1245 towards Howe Green, turning left up Church Road to South Hanningfield and then left again into Middlemead and back to South Hanningfield (notice all the left turns!). One option for a leisure ride from South Hanningfield is to West Hanningfield along Middlemead (encouraging the riders hurtling towards you in the opposite direction), then onto Lower Stock Road to Leather Bottle Hill and then back to South Hanningfield via either Downham Road or Dowsetts Lane, Ramsden Heath and Downham. Refreshments will be available in South Hanningfield Village Hall.

Sunday 4th June - Southend Wheelers Road Race Championships, Hog Hill
In 2017 we return to Hog Hill for the Championship Race, Novice Race, Ladies Race and other events that have included elimination, relay and tandem races in the past. Event is open to club members only.

Sunday 2nd July - Norman Wells Open 50
The event HQ is Steeple Village Hall. The riders compete in an anticlockwise direction from Steeple to Latchingdon to Ashedham and back to Steeple. If you are riding out from Battlesbridge / Woodham Ferrers please ride straight to Steeple from Latchingdon so that you are travelling in the opposite dorection to the racers. Please do not drive to Steeple due to lack of parking.

Sunday 9th July - Championship 10 Mile Time Trial, Bulphan
You will probably be riding this event; even if your medal chances are slim, this course is faster than Steeple so if you are not riding the E2 at Newmarket this season then this is your best chance of a PB.
The TT course at Bulphan is out-and-back along the A128 so please avoid this road but Bulphan Village Hall is easily accessible from Laindon / Basildon / Langdon Hills via Doesgate Lane which meets Lower Dunton Road close to the Essex Wildlife Centre at Plotlands.

Sunday 10th September - Andrews Trophy Road Race

This event is based at East Hanningfield Village Hall and features several (a dozen?) laps of a circuit from East Hanningfield to Howe Green, turning left onto the A1245 (the old A130) and left again into Pan Lane and looping back round to How Green, repeating many times until finishing on Pan Lane. Refreshments will be available at East Hanningfield Village Hall

Sunday 24th September - Championship 25 Mile Trial, Steeple
Like most time trials, this is based at Steeple village hall. A pleasant ride from Battlesbridge via Radar Hill and Stow Maries. If you are riding over to support the event, please don't ride on the course in the same direction as the athletes; from the mini-roundabout at Latchingdon, continue directly up the main road to Steeple, cheering the racers as they pass you on the other side of the road.

Sunday 22nd October - Club Hill Climb, Little Baddow
Some, if not all, of the the ride out to Little Baddow features most weeks for the 9am riders but if you are riding the Hill Climb then the ride out is a good warm up and if you are just going out to watch (or marshall) then the ride out is equally enjoyable.

Sunday 17th December - Christmas Pudding Time Trial and Lunch
Surely you will all be riding the event, but if not the ride out to Steeple on a crisp winter's morning is delightful. And if you find that you have eaten too much pudding or drunk too much wine at the dinner afterwards, you can always get a train home from Southminster (though do check that engineering work hasn't turned your train into a bus)
