Cam to Coast 2011

On Saturday 26th March, a group of seven Southend Wheelers joined almost 500 riders on the inaugural Cam to Coast Bike Ride, a 75 mile ride from Cambridge to Southend in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Family members were dragged out of bed for an early morning drive to Cambridge where Jane and Martin Harris, Nick and Hannah Khan, Adrian and Carol Cartwright and Julie Kane met a few familiar faces from Cycle Southend who were promoting the ride in conjunction with Cycle Cambridge.

Leaving Cambridge via Addenbrook's Hospital, the route followed a cycle track along the railway to Shelford before joining a minor road through the villages of Whittlesford, Duxford and Great Chesterford before passing the impressive Audley End Country House. The ride through Saffron Walden, Debden and Thaxted was a little hillier before flattening out towards Great Dunmow. The easterly wind didn't help the section to Great Leighs and then it was back into home territory via Boreham, North Hill Little Baddow, Danbury, Bicknacre, Rettendon and Battlesbridge. The traffic grew through Rayleigh and Eastwood before reaching the seafront at Chalkwell Shelter for the 5 mile section to Shoebury East Beach where the Cycle Southend crew cheered us home.

It was a great route through the quiet lanes of Cambridgeshire and Essex and we all hope that this event will grow into our own Spring Classic.
