ECCA Festival 2014

A message from Denise Kemp about the ECCA festival over the Mayday bank holiday. For more information see Denise at Canewdon on Sundays or e-mail eccafestival@southendwheelers.org

Dear fellow wheelers,

The weather is finally improving and we can start planning our year ahead.
Whether  you are a keen time trialist, a randonnee  lover, a road racer or you just like to watch the rest of us suffer!, this yearís ECCA Festival has something for you.

The ECCA Festival takes place over Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2014 and is a competition between clubs rather than individuals(although individual winners are of course rewarded too). The competition includes road races at Hog Hill for youths of all ages; women and Masters,
a cat 3/4 open Road Race and an Open Road Race for Elite and cat 1,2 and 3 riders  at Hatfield Heath.

The time trialists have a choice of distances between 5 miles and 20 miles spread over 5 events and the 3 days. Two of these events are for 2upís if you wish and one has entries for tandems too! If you just fancy a nice gentle summers ride you can take part in the 50km or 100km randonnee on the Monday, taking in some of the beautiful countryside around the Easters and finally there is the Open Map Reading contest (approx. 20 miles) also around the High Easters.

Any event you enter and complete is rewarded with points which are added up over the 3 days of events and the club with the most points are the Winners! Points are awarded on speed for the time trials and if you take part as a 2up or tandem, both riders receive points. Last year only a handful of us took part but still managed to secure 6th place over all. This year I think we have a good chance of winning if a good mix of cyclists takes part. One thing about the Southend wheelers is that we are that good mix, some road racers, young and younger still, some time trialists, lots of riders who just love to ride and a few good map readers too, (Simon Broad and his wife Kate took 2nd place for that skill last year!). Apparently, we won this event seven years running. This was definitely a while ago now so time we had another shot at it!

Please check your diaries this week and seriously consider taking part with your fellow Wheelers this year. I will be at the hall this coming Sunday with all the events, dates and times and information on how to enter.

Letís put our club back on the map and shake this competition up. Itís time we won our cup back!!!
