ECCA Festival

Saturday May 3rd.

Southend Wheelers had 4 competitors in the events at Hog Hill.

In the under 12's Katie Elliston started at the rear of the 40 plus field and which split her right after the start leaving her in the second group. She attacked from this group to bridge the gap but the pace was very high and so couldn't make it up to the leaders and had to push on mainly alone for the rest of the race, finishing as 6th girl and gaining valuable points.

In the under 16's race, James Jenkins led the field of 40 plus riders through the early laps and looked very strong. With about 3 laps to go one rider broke clear of the field with James in hot pursuit. However he was unable to bridge the gap and was subsequently caught and dropped by the remainder of the leading group and finished just off the back.

Adam Jones and Adam Foster were down to ride the 3rd and 4th cat race of 1 hour plus five laps. Sixteen years old Adam Foster entered for this race because there was no junior race. It was his very first race of any discipline and he was very nervous at the start and clearly did not like riding in the large bunch of about 40 riders and soon drifted off the back. He was also handicapped by having to use junior gearing which made it very difficult for him on the downhill section on the large circuit. Adam Jones stayed with the leaders for about half distance and then he too was dropped on the hill. Both Wheelers were subsequently lapped and then Adam Foster stayed with a small group, including Adam Jones, where he was clearly more comfortable till the last 5 lap, when all the lapped riders were pulled out.

All of the races took place on the large circuit and all of our riders rode to the best of their ability and should be congratulated on their performances that gained valuable points in the overall club competition. Photo Gallery

In the 10 mile Time Trial at Redbridge, Chris Smith (snr) was 15th with a time of 34:37. Fastest rider was Colin Ward of Essex Roads in 22:40

Sunday May 4th

On Sunday, 2 teams entered the map reading contest - Jane and Martin Harris were team 1 and team 2 was Jon Ellis and Dean Silk gaining 10 more points for the club. Whilst not challenging for honours, Jane and Martin had the consolation of winning the second tie-break, but unfortunately the competition was secured without the need for tie-breaks! In the 100km randonnee, Roy Godbeer, Dave Whybrow, Les Bantock, Jon Ellis, Matt Welbourn Carol Cartwright and Julie Kane all completed the course. Unfortunately for Carol and Julie, they went off course and ended up with 80 miles on the clock. Very well done to them and all the other Southend riders. Jane and Martin Harris rode 38 miles of the event.

In the 50 km randonnee, Graham and Beckie Pearl, Baz and Eileen Bristow, both pairs on tandems and Jordan Kemp completed the course gaining more valuable points in the club Team competition.

Provisional results indicate that Essex Roads CC has won the overall team competition, but it is not known where the Southend figure in the result at this time.
