2016 Winter Racing and Time Trial Update

Sunday 21st Feb: VLAMERTINGE Junior race in Belgium

James took his good legs to Belgium where he competed in his first Belgian kermesse. He got himself in a 4 man break which held off the bunch for 60 k, reeled back in with 10k to go, James, with tiring legs, fought hard and managed to pinch 7th in the sprint finish.

Winter Series Hog Hill

This year's Winter Series over at Redbridge has consisted of 8 brutal races. With representation by a number of Wheelers - Jamie Maidment, both Dave and Chris Pennington, Peter Stiff, Ben Willy, Paul Hart and James Jenkins - it has been a very successful campaign.
Going into the final round the Wheelers were guaranteed two top ten places but they had larger ambitions and Paul Hart rode the whole race in the service of James, keeping him out of trouble. The race remained a cagey duel with local time trial legend, Colin Ward's (Essex Roads) attempts to escape reeled back by the attentive Wheelers. The last lap saw the group still together. James held his nerve and beat Colin by half a wheel to take seventh place but more importantly the overall title of Series Winner.

Winter Series Hog Hill

The traditional early season current raiser, The Winter Series, continues to be popular with the Wheelers' racing division with regular entries in both the 4th cat and 2/3/4 races over at Hog Hill. In the 4ths, Jamie Maidment, Chris Pennington and Ben Willy have all represented the club, getting stronger every week culminating in Ben picking up 10th this weekend.

Chris, Peter Stiff, Dave Pennington have all tried their legs in the 2/3/4 races along with Paul Hart and James Jenkins. Paul has taken to the course and has a third and a second place finish to his name already this season.

There have been some incredibly hard fought races, none more so than this weekend when the brutal wind played havoc with the field. A clutch of Wheelers' spectators were rewarded with seeing James take the win, soloing away up the penultimate climb to win by 15 seconds. This, along with a 10th and a 2nd earlier on in the series, means he is currently third in the league with three races to go.

James has also been in action in the two LVYCC Junior races over at the Hoggenberg scoring two solo breakaway victories including lapping the main bunch on one occasion. He's clearly started the season with a bang.
