2016 May Racing and Time Trial Update

Sunday 29th May - Bulphan 10 / 2016 Easter Egg/ Cup
Chris Smith III (why do we have so may Chris Smiths?) is the 2016 Easter Egg Champion with a PB of 23:40 and was also first on Handicap, Barry Simpson also set a PB of 24:05 to take second place and First on Vet Age Standard. Katie-Ann Elliston also set a PB, 27:07, to be fastest Lady and fastest Juvenile (and Junior). There were also PBs for Richard Dean, Alex Sinclair, Lesley Pearce and Chris Smith (snr).
Russel Whitford set a blistering time of 26:53 on a mountain bike and is now leading the Fat Tyre Category for 2016, beating Jamie Maidment's time of 28:53 set at Steeple.
Fastest rider on the day was Simon Alexander of Richardsons-Trek who set a 'disappointing' time of 20:02 - did he not have 3 seconds more in his legs to get down onto the 19s?     Results   Tables

Wednesday 25th May - Wednesday League
David Pennington was fastest rider for the second Wednesday running and for the third time this season, Nick Morley was fastest Veteran and first on Handicap, Peter Stiff was first on Vet Age Standard, Denise Kemp fastest Lady and Jordan Kemp the only Junior. There was also a PB for Lesley Pearce. Results   Tables

Sunday 22nd May - Maldon Open 50 - 2016 Southend Wheelers 50 Mile Cup
David Pennington is the 2016 50 Mile Champion, recording a PB of 2:05:32 at Steeple, Peter Stiff was fastest Vet and first on Vet Age Standard with Novice Mark Williams first on Handicap. There was also a PB for Jamie Maidment. Results   Tables

Saturday 21st May - ECCA 10, Six Mile Bottom
Paul Hart set the season's best time of 20:24, beating James Jenkins' best by just 6 seconds. Paul currently has the fastest 10, 25 and 50 for 2016.

Wednesday 18th May - Wednesday League
David Pennington was fastest ride, Peter Stiff fastest Veteran and first on Vet Age Std and Lesley Pearce fastest Lady. Richard Dean, Andy Merchant and Nicola Wright all set PBs, Jane Harris set her fastest time on the Steeple course (just 26 seconds slower than her PB from Bulphan) and Mark Grove made his debut appearance. Sunday 15th May - Club Hilly, South Hanningfield
Jamie Maidment is the 2016 Hilly TT Champion with a time of 48:48, Peter Stiff was fastest veteran in 50:15 and Lesley Pearce fastest lady in 1:04:59. Special mention for Thomas Knowler, riding a 2-Up with his uncle Arthur, who took a full 4 minutes from last year's time, also a 2-Up with Arthur.

Saturday 14th May - ECCA Open 50, E2
Paul Hart set a PB of 1:43:10. This is very possibly a New Club Record - it is the only sub-2 hour 50 mile TT that the webmaster has in his records going back to 2012. An excellent time.

Wednesday 11th May - Wednesday League
James Jenkins just missed breaking the 22 minute mark with the fastest ride of the night at 22:03 almost 2 minutes quicker than second placed rider Harrison Smith. Phil Warner was fastest Veteran, Peter Stiff forst on Vet Age Standard, Simon Smith first on Handicap and Denise Kemp fastest Lady. A big field tonight as we welcomed our friends from EETC.
There were also PBs John Gretton (26:41) and Richard Dean (29:05), Harrison Smith's time of 23:47 is fastest recorded in the Southend Wheeler's database but he may hve some quicker times recorded with EETC.  Results  Tables

Sunday 8th May - Andrews Road Race
James Jenkins sprinted to 9th place and his 1st Category status, Paul Hart & David Pennington finished in the main bunch.
Race winner was Jake Hales of Spirit Bikes RT; local favourites Simon Alexander and Andy Lyons of Richardsons-Trek were 7th & 12th. Results

Saturday 7th May - Lea Valley Open 10, Six Mile Bottom
A fast day again on the E2 with James Jenkins was just 5 seconds off his best time with 21:30 and father Dan 40 seconds from a PB with 23:59.

Saturday 7th May - National Omnium, Stratford Velodrome
Katie-Ann Ellsiton had a tough day today in the 2nd round of the National Omnium's she road a good first TT which put her in fourth .She had not had a good trip to the track as she was sick on the way there She road OK in the devil but made a tactical error and went out in 7th .Next was the scratch which she road well and finished in 5th ,She then had the sprint race which was in seeded heats as she was sitting in 5th on points overall was the second heat her plan was to go from the g...un and rip there legs of which was going great but 50m in till she crashed the race was red flagged . We got her to the medical tent to assess the damage but it was bump's bruises and gravel rash ,so the comisare granted her a re ride and 20 mins to be patched up while they run the u16 boy's heats .She got back on her bike and road a few laps of the inner track with two Welwyn girl to see she felt ok. They re drew positions and Katie-Ann got 4th gate which is top of track still sticking to plan A she went from the gun got a 20m gap and held it to the finish at 500m for a 1st .Then she had to go back to the medical tent for them to clean and dress her arms and hip and knee. Then back on the rollers to warm up for the last race the point's race she dug in and managed a 5th she finished the day with 159 points in joint 5th. So she is still in contention to get to the final with two rounds to go. The 3rd round is tomorrow down in Brighton so fingers crossed she is not to sore and stiff in the morning it's still only 5 week from her big crash in Brighton .She is one tough little cookie.

Wednesday 4th May - Wednesday League, 10 Miles, Steeple
James Jenkins is back in a familiar place - on top of the podium with a time of 22:15, Peter Stiff was fastest veteran and first on age standard, John Gretton first on Handicap, Denise Kemp first Lady and Hannah Shean forst Lady Junior. There were PBs for Richard Dean and Andy Merchant.

Monday 2nd May - ECCA Festival 10
After a couple of cancellations the Sunday League finally got started with the ECCA Festival 10 at High Easter. Fastest rider at the event was Colin Ward of Essex Roads with 21:01, third overall and first Wheeler was Paul Hart with 21:51. In all 10 Wheelers entered the event with Peter Stiff fastest Vet (Wheelers only), Barry Simpson first on Handicap and Vet Age Standard, Denise Kemp first Lady and Jordan Kemp the only Junior.
