June Racing and Time Trial Update


Wednesday 28th June - Essex Roads Hilly TT, West Hanningfield
David Pennington (32:19) and John Gretton (35:36) completed the demanding Hilly course at West Hanningfield while Hannah Bardell did one lap of the circuit in 24:11. David Pennington's time was good enough for 3rd place.

Wednesday 28th June - Wednesday League, Steeple
Unfortunately tonight's Time Trial was cancelled due to the heavy rain affecting the road surface after recent surface dressing. The scratch championship has now been reduced to best 10 events.

Sunday 25th June - ECCA 10, Bulphan
What a day for the Southend Wheelers with Paul Hart the fastest rider on the day in 20:37 and Chris Smith III setting a PB of 21:22, good enough for 3rd overall. Dan Jenkins was fastest Vet in 23:19, John Gretton set a PB of 25:20, Andy Merchant recorded 27:08 and Ian Mackenzie 33:24 on his Trike. Results     Tables

June Summary - things you may have missed
• Katie-Ann Elliston qualified for the GHS ‘10’ final
• In the Rapha Nocturne Paul Hart placed 36th having stayed in what remained of the main group in a field including Olympic champions and the cream of the home professionals. Former Wheeler George Wood starred at the front of the race and placed 5th after a spirited ride (and lots of mentions in commentary). John Gretton also got his 10 seconds of ‘fame’ on TV whilst spectating, wearing a Wheelers cap!
• Chris Smith III placed 4th in the Maldon CC ‘50’ with an excellent time of 1:59:07.
• Steve Sach is back road racing again and is now a 3rd cat. He’s had some decent results, picking up a 3rd place at the Stowmarket circuit races on 27th May and placed 4th and 7th at two of the Eagles Criterium series held at Rock Barracks, RAF Woodbridge during April and May.
• Dan Pugh picked up his first ever points by placing 7th in the ECCA circuit races at Hog Hill on 10th June.
• Congratulations to David Pennington who represented GB in the ETU Triathlon age group championships in Kitzbühel, Austria recording a time of 2:18:32 for the Olympic distance triathlon, and placing 25th in the 25-29 age group.

Wednesday 21st June - Wednesday League, West Hanningfield E39 (Hilly Course) with Essex Roads
Due to roadworks tonight's Time Trial was moved to the West Hanningfield (Hilly) E39 Course, with 2 laps giving a distance of 12.6 miles. Dave Pennington was fastest Wheeler in 31:21, Dan Jenkins Fastest Vet in 34:27 and Katie-Ann Elliston Fastest Lady in 40:33. The results are showing Handicaps based on 10 miles so may be disregarded for the league, Vet Age Std are based on VTT custom values for 12.6 miles. Results    Tables

Wednesday 14th June - Wednesday League 10 miles, Steeple
Dan Jenkins was Fastest Wheeler and Fastest Vet with a time of 25:05, also good enough for First on Handicap, 18 seconds faster than Paul Hughes. John Gretton was First on Vet Age Std and Katie-Ann Elliston was Fastest Lady and Fastest Junior. The field was boosted by several riders from EETC; Mark Brown of EETC was fastest rider in a time of 24:44. Results     Tables

Sunday 11th June - Chelmer / Southend Inter-club, E83 (Viper Circuit). Bob Haworth Trophy
Despite three impressive performances by our three-man counting team this morning, Southend Wheelers were beaten convincingly by Chelmer C.C. in this year's edition of the annual interclub competition between the two clubs (Colchester Rovers CC and Maldon & Dist. C.C. having dropped out in recent years).

Special thanks for his perseverance must go to organiser Sam Wightman who managed to overcome roadworks on both the original and back-up courses and quickly mount a plan C on the E83 course, commonly known as the Viper circuit.

Sunday 11th June - KCA 100 Mile TT
Ian Mackenzie recorded a time of 6:18:53 on his Trike

Saturday 10th June - CC London Hog with the Occasional Hill. Redbridge Cycle Centre
Dan Pugh was 16th in the 4th Cat Race

Saturday 10th June - London Nocturne
John Gretton at the London Nocturne, watching Paul Hart and the Richardsons-Trek team. George Wood took an amazing 5th place.
Paul Hart finished in the second group in 36th position.

Saturday 10th June - Maldon Open & GHS 10, Steeple
Chris Smith III picked up his fifth win of the season with a Personal Best time of 22:09, Andy Merchant was just 15 second off his best in 27:14 and Katie-Ann Elliston qualified for the GHS finals. Results    Tables

Saturday 3rd June - Shaftesbury 25
Mike Hennessy claimed his third age record of the year, this time for 25 miles for 76 with a time of 1:09:04. Age Records

Wednesday 7th June - Wednesday League. Spoco 10 Mile Time Trial, East Hanningfield, with Essex Roads
Paul Hart was fastest Wheeler and second fastest overall with a time of 22:36, Peter Stiff was fastest Vet in 25:34 and Lesley Pearce fastest Lady in 34:39. Peter Stiff, Jamie Maidment, Dan Jenkins, Andy Merchant, Terry Butcher and Lesley Pearce all set course bests on the E18 course. Fastest rider overall was Colin Ward of Essex Roads. Tuesday 6th June - Maldon 25, Steeple
Jamie Maidment recorded a time of 1:10:24

Sunday 4th June - 2017 Club Road Race Championships, Hog Hill
Chris Smith III is the 2017 Road Race Championship with a commanding victory over his beak-away companions Dan Pugh and Jamie Maidment. Dan Pugh was Fastest Veteran. Elsewhere Katie-Ann Elliston took the Ladies Road Race Championship and the Ladies Elimination Race, Barry Simpson took the Men's Elimination Race, Slow Race and the Tandem Race with Jordan Kemp. James Scarsbrook took the Novice and All-Comers Race.
Chris's victory also consolidates his position at the top of the BAR (Best All Rounder) Standings. Race Results.   BAR Table
