Manchester-based Bob Barber very kindly dropped a note to say that
he had ventured to the wrong side of the Pennines (Yorkshire) and
"I was in Sheffield last night to watch the National Circuit Race Championships. I always look out for Richardsons-Trek as some of the team are ex Southend Wheelers. George was in an early break which got caught and then when he was going across to another break, fell off."
As it was, the precociously talented Tom Pidcock took the victory. The 17-year old won from the bunch with a monster uphill surge to pull clear of his nearest pursuers, Harry Tanfield and Jon Mould.
Track star Katie Archibald gapped Elinor Barker to win gold in the Women's race, with Lucy Shaw completing the podium.
