Southend Wheelers held their annual track championships on Sunday 28
July at the famous Herne Hill Velodrome, London. Twelve riders from the
club took part over five events to decide who would be the club track
Several new riders took part this year receiving coaching and instruction from Bob Barber (current Veteran World Track Champion) and club coach Chris Smith along with Herne Hill coaches, prior to the afternoon events.
The first event was the 200 metre flying time trial with favourite Katie-Ann Elliston clocking a time of 14:10 secs, closely followed by her father Nick (14:48) and Chris Smith (14:89). The events purpose is not only to see who the fastest over 200 metres is, it also acts a seeding process for the Sprint event which follows.
The sprint event over one lap of the velodrome saw two riders from the seeding process compete over one lap of the velodrome with some very close finishes in the process. Katie-Ann Elliston took the overall win in the final, with new riders Matthew Stock and Neil Dobson finishing second and third respectively. Other notable rides in the event were from youth rider Cavan Burrows, who in his first outing on the track show complete composure in his event.
After a short break for refreshments the longer events were next to be run, starting with the one mile, followed by the 3 mile and the final event of the day the 20 lap 5 mile. In all cases Katie-Ann showed her true ability on the track winning all events and in the case of the 20 lap event, closing over a half lap gain on Andrew Merchant, with them, then both working together to eventually lapping the field with three laps to go. It was in the final laps that the event was stopped due to an accident between two riders, Terry Butcher and Peter Swanwick, so a count back over the previous laps was used to work out final positions when crossing the previous finish line. Happily, both riders were able to travel home following medical treatment at the local hospital and are recovering well with some grazes and bruising.
The final results for the day were:
1st Katie-Ann Elliston - 2019 Snr, Lady and Jun Club track champion
2nd Matthew Stock
3rd Chris Smith
Cavan Burrows – 2019 Juvenile club track champion
