Mike Street was watching the race and had this to say:
I rode over to Knaresborough and gave him a cheer there and then back across to a point about 5km from the finish with 4 hills for him still to climb. I then managed to ride with him all the way to the finish and give him the encouragement that he sorely needed by then. About 100 meters from the line the broom wagon driver stopped me so that the finish line photo would not include anyone else.. After he had crossed the line I was then allowed to ride through the finish line. Something that I never thought I would ever do whilst an event was still taking place as there was still competitors from other events still to finish.
Rob displayed immense character today as it was I think much harder than he had anticipated. He will certainly sleep well tonight, well done Rob you have done yourself proud.

Not surprisingly Rob described it as the toughest ride he has ever done.
