Every month we will try to publish moments in our club history – this month we take a back look at the month of August.

06 Aug 1955 – First National Medal for the club
Brian Wiles wins the first National Medal for the club, gaining 3rd place in the NCU Junior Sprint Championship at the Butts Stadium, Coventry.

21 Aug 1955 – First post war 50 mile open TT
The club promoted its first post war 50 mile Open Time Trial. First place went to Vic Gibbons (Brentwood RC) in a time of 1hr 57mins 16secs

11 Aug 1956 – First National title for the club
Building on his success in 1955, Brian Wiles becomes the first rider in the club to hold a National title. 1st NCU Junior Sprint Champion winning at the Butts Stadium, Coventry.

23 Aug 1959 – New competition record
Bryan Wiltcher (Zeus RC) sets a new competition record for 50 miles in the club’s 50 mile Open Time Trial with a winning time of 1hr 53mins 56secs

21 Aug 1960 – Competition record equalled
One year after Bryan Wilcher’s record, Ron Jowers (Clarence Wheelers) also matched the competition time of 1hr 53mins 56secs

20 Aug 1961 – New competition record
John Woodburn (Barnet CC) sets a new competition record in the in club’s 50 mile Open Time Trial shaving 5 seconds off the old Bryan Wilcher’s record, to record a time of 1hr 53mins 51secs.

19 Aug 1962 – New competition record
Frank Colden (Camberley Wheelers) set a new competition record in the in club’s 50 mile Open Time, reducing John Woodburn’s record by over a minute to 1hr 52mins 38secs

23 Aug 1964 – Open 50 dedicated to Norman Wells
Following the passing of Norman Wells the club decided to create the ‘Norman Wells Memorial Trophy’. An award which is still in use today. Eric Moody (Edgware RC) became the first recipient of this award, finishing in a time of 1hr 53mins 27secs, which, had he ridden in the 1962 event, he would have won and set a new competition record in the process!

Andrews Trophy
The Andrews Road Race trophy was promoted by the Romford RC in the first two years of the event and won by the same rider, but of different clubs. The event is now a favourite open road race promotion by Southend Wheelers attracting local racing teams.
