In 2019, Southend Wheelers member Richard was involved in a serious road
accident whilst out riding his bike in Shoeburyness, resulting in need
of the services of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance team and the
specialist equipment and crew that they bring to roadside emergencies.
Following 20 mins of roadside CPR, Richard was air lifted to The Royal
London Hospital, Whitechapel, for initial treatment, then moved to
Southend Hospital with his final and main treatment at the Royal
Orthopaedic hospital at Stanmore. One year on and now at home Richard’s health is improving, all down to the skills of those emergency services that attended to him at the roadside that day and the ongoing care he continually receives as part of his recovery process. Following Richard’s accident, Southend Wheelers decided that any fundraising efforts during the year should go towards supporting the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance team. A raffle was held at their annual awards dinner in February along with the proceed from their early season Burnham and Baddow Cycle Challenge, where club members and riders of other clubs took part. Both events amassing a total sum of £1,047.47p which has been passed on to Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.
