As we role in to 2021, we continue to look back to moments in our club
history. Now that we are at the start of the year, this can only mean
one thing, the club Awards Dinner and Prize Presentation. This article is perhaps more poignant then, this year, as our club awards dinner cannot proceed due to the Covid-19 restrictions that are currently in place and whilst events are planned for the season ahead, officials and riders have no idea what will take place. It is probably fair to say that the last time the club was in a similar situation was during the period of the second world war, when club activites were put on hold. Looking through the club archives we are able to see the names of some of our of guest speakers, from George Hogsflesh (1937) to Arthur Holmes at our Silver Jubilee dinner (1948, whom we have a trophy named after), even Southend‘s Carnival Queen, Jean Briscoe (1950). Ron Webb the well-known velodrome designer attended in 1963, whilst Vin Denson has attended twice in 1969 & 97. Other famous names have included Phil Liggett (1971); Hugh Porter MBE (1973); Thomas Evans (GB Para Cyclist – 1997) and Danny Crates (GB Paralympian (2012). The full list of guest speakers is here for you to see, along with a range of photos over the years when we were all younger, dare I say, slimmer. |
