2021 Spring & Summer Racing & Time Trial Update

25th Sepetember - Saturday League, Canewdon E36, 7 Miles
And just like that the Saturday League is over for another year but the final event did not fail to deliver with Henry O'Kill, one of  PBs, setting the fastest time almost a minute quicker than David Pennington. Oliver Pidgeon rounded off the podium with another PB. Barry Simpson and Jan Harvey took the other honours with Martin Carter, Neil Dobson and Helen Smythe the other PBs. Results Tables

18th September - Saturday League, Canewdon E36, 7 Miles
What a day we had today with 22 club members and 2 guest riders. Dan Walsh was fastest rider in 16:47, just 1 second shy of his own Club Vets record. It was great to see David Pennington back racing with an impressive time of 17:00; Dan Jenkins was fastest non-aero and along with Dan Walsh and Oliver Pidgeon (PB), set a new club team record for Male Vets for 7 Miles. Tom Womack was fastest Youth with another PB and along with Cavan Burrows and Antoine Royuer-Brown, who also PBd, set a new club team record for Male Juniors for 7 Miles. Katie-Ann Ellsiton was Fastest Woman in another PB whilst Helen Smythe and Phil Carter also set PBs. Chris Madden was fastest Hand-Cycle with yet another sub-20.

11th September - Saturday League, Canewdon E36, 7 Miles
The second Saturday event of September saw a fantastic 21 rider turn out with Dan Walsh the fastest rider and Barry Simpson, Oliver Pidgeon, Jan Harvey, Tom Womack and Chris Madden taking the other honours. Plus there were two PBs (Tom Womack & Adam Jones) and a dead-heat between Cavan Burrows & Adam Jones.

5th September - Sunday League, ECCA 25, E9
The final event of the 2021 Sunday League saw 3 Wheelers take on the E9 course with James Lonergan fastest with a Course-Best and both Dan Walsh and Cavan Burrows setting PBs.

All 3 of our racing Youths qualified for this event and all 3 set PBs: Tom Womack 24:58, Cavan Burrows 25:05 & Antoine Rouyer-Brown 25:36

4th September - VTTA 10, E2
Dan Jenkins set a new Age Record for 10 miles for 54 on the E2 course. Age Records

4th September - Saturday League, Canewdon E36, 7 Miles
The Saturday League has returned for 4 races in September as the season winds down. A reminder to all competitors; with the exception of Youths and Hand-Cyclists, all riders must marshall at least one event. Any rider not marshalling will be disqualified from the league tables. The honours this week were taken by Oliver Pidgeon, Jan Harvey and Chris Madden.

5 Course-Bests from 8 riders at the final TT for solos; all but the scratch leagues are now finalised ahead of the season-ending 2-Up next week.

11th August - Wednesday League, Steeple E21
5 PBs and 1 CB resulting from a combination of ideal conditions at Steeple and late-season form with James Lonergan, Dan Walsh, Tom Womack and Katie-Ann Elliston taking the honours. Results   Tables

8th August - Southend Wheelers 25 Mile Championship plus the Chelmer-Southend Interclub for the Bob Haworth Trophy. Writtle, E9
From 10 riders we had 6 PBs and 3 CBs. Henry O'Kill is the 2021 25 Mile Champion with the other category wins taken by Dan Jenkins, Jan Harvey and Cavan Burrows. Unfortunately Chelmer took both the Individual and Team Inter-club Trophies. Results   Tables

7th August - VTTA 25 Mile TT
Dan Jenkins set a PB and the fastest 25 mile of the season so far of 54:03 on the F2 course

4th August - Wednesday League, Hanningfield E18, with Essex Roads
A 1-2 for Southend Wheelers v Essex Roads with James Lonergan and Dan Jenkins the two fastest riders. 3 Course-bests were set. Results   Tables

31st July - Festival of Women's Cycling 7 Mile TT, Canewdon E36
12 riders, a mixture of club members and novices entered the event with Jan Harvey fastest rider setting a PB of 17:21

28th July - Wednesday League, Steeple, E21
6 riders braved the wet conditions with James Lonergan taking the honours. Results   Tables

25th July - Outlaw Ironman Distance Triathlon, Nottingham
Jennie Page was 21st overall and 7th in her age group completing the course in 12:09:08. Fantastic effort.

21st July - Wednesday League, Hanningfield, E18, with Essex Roads
A course best for Adam Jones and another win for James Lonergan. Results   Tables

18th July - Shaftesbury 50, F2
Dan Jenkins set a PB of 1:52:52 to cement his place at the top of the BAR

17th July - ECCA Open 15, E91, Leaden Roding
2 Wheelers entered this rarely-raced distance, fuelled by the promise of a breakfast at the Wilkins & Sons (Tiptree) Tea Room at Writtle. Katie-Ann Elliston could not quite match her club record of 37:07 with a time of 39:31 and though Martin Harris was unable to beat the club vets record of 39:37 set back in 2003 by Jenny Patience, he has set the Male Veteran Record for 15 miles plus the Age Related record for 53. He would also like to point out that he rides a road-bike and that he beat Colin Ward by 10 seconds on Handicap......

Four PBs this week, one each for the 3 Youth riders, and a Course Best with James Lonergan taking the win. Results   Tables

Dan Jenkins and Jan Harvey cemented their positions at the top of the tables, both setting course-bests. Results   Tables

7th July - Wednesday League, Hanningfield E18, 11.6 miles with Essex Road
7 riders prioritised Wednesday League over Euro football semi-finals with James Lonergan fastest rider, Dan Jenkins was Fastest Vet, Adam Jones set a course-best, Jan Harvey was fastest Woman and Antoine Rouyer-Brown fastest Youth. Results   Tables

4th July - Norman Wells 50 Mile TT (& Sunday League), Steeple E21
Final results are still pending but Jan Harvey was our only entrant, recording a time of 2:19:13, meaning that she has wrapped up the Ladies Sunday League for 2021

26th June - Saturday League, Canewdon E36, 7 Miles
A healthy start list of 18 riders (where were you all last Sunday?) as the first phase of the Saturday League draws to a close with 13 recording a PB. There were also 5 hand-cycles. Dan Walsh was fastest overall with Barry Simpson, Oliver Pidgeon, Cavan Burrows, Jan Harvey and Chris Madden taking the other honours. The Saturday League resumes in September. Results Tables

26th June - ECCA 10, E21 Six Mile Bottom
Two entries and two PBs: Dan Jenkins with 20:29 and Katie-Ann Elliston 23:08. Continuing the theme of 2, Paul Hart was second overall in 18:35, just 2 seconds behind the race winner. Dan's time was also a new Age Record

23rd June - Wednesday League, Steeple E21
3 PBs on another glorious night at Steeple; Dan Jenkins was the fastest rider with Cavan Burrows and Jan Harvey taking the other honours

20th June - 2021 Championship 10 Mile TT (& Sunday League), Steeple E21
A disappointing turn out of just 13 riders for one of the show-piece events of the year. It was a wet morning but the rain held off for the race and the roads were reasonably dry, so 9 of the 13 riders were on their TT bikes. 2021 Champion was Henry O'Kill, with a time of 22:41, Dan Jenkins was Fastest Vet, Cavan Burrows Fastest Youth and Jan Harvey set a course-best to take the Woman's prize. After yesterday's 7 she is currently the only rider to compete all disciplies required for the BAR

8 PBs from 12 riders with Adam Jones pipping Jan Harvey for first place by 3 seconds. Results Tables

16th June - Wednesday League, East Hanningfield, 11.6miles with Essex Roads
Another warm evening saw 7 of the 6 Wheelers set course-bests. Not content with a CB, Dan Jenkins was fastest rider overall, Jan Harvey maintained her dominance of the Ladies competition and Cavan Burrows continual improvements suggest that the Junior & Youth categories will go right down to the wire.

12th June - Saturday League, Canewdon 7 miles, E36
Henry O'Kill maintained his 100% record at the Saturday 7 with a PB of 16:22. Adam Jones also set a PB of 19:15 and we saw our first hand-cycle of the Saturday series, unfortunately Rob Womack DNS due to a puncture. Most riders chose to ride non-aero today.

9th June - Roy Godbeer Non-Aero 10 (Wednesday League), Steeple E21
A delightful evening saw James Lonergan crowned 2021 non-aero champion with a time of 24:04. The evening also saw PBs for Dan Pugh, Oliver Pidgeon and Cavan Burrows, a course-best for Martin Harris and a new Age record for 68 years for Carol Cartwright and for 84 years for Michael Street. Jennie Page was Fastest Woman and Tom Womack Fastest Youth (Cavan Burrows and Antoine Royeur Brown elected to ride aero). Rob Womack set his inaugural 10 mile time at a higher average speed than his races on the 7 mile course.

6th June - Maldon 50, Steeple E21 (Sunday League)
Just 2 Wheelers in action today with Jan Harvey knocking almost 10 minutes off her previous best with a time of 2:19:04. Paul Gribbon also set a PB of 2:28:38

6th June - RTTC 32.5 mile TT, Naseby, NC16N
Dan Jenkins was 40th with a time of 1:22:48, third in his age category.

5th June - Saturday League, Canewdon 7 miles, E36
Henry O'kill was the fastest rider but Dan Jenkins (Vet) and Cavan Burrows (Junior & Youth) both set club records. The webmaster was not at the finish line; Tom Womack and Cava Burrows were both given the same finish time. If Tom crossed the line first then he would have set the Youth record only for Cavan to break it a fraction of a second later. The Veteran , Junior & Youth Team records for 7 miles were also set today. Results Tables  Club Records

2nd June - Wednesday League, East Hanningfield, 11.6miles with Essex Roads
An amazing 6 Course Bests from 8 riders as the Southend Wheelers took the top 3 places in the battle with Essex Roads. Who can top Henry O'Kill?

15th & 16th May - TTs and Triathlons
Well what a weekend that was with Dan Jenkins setting 2 PBs and the fastest times of the season so far with a 55:33 at the ECCA 25 on the F2 course and a 21:25 a day later at a 10 mile event on the F11.
Meanwhile Jan Harvey has had an excellent tri result: "I had a great triathlon race yesterday at Southport Standard Distance ETU qualifier with my fastest time yet and came 2nd in my age group and qualified to race for Great Britain at the European Champs in 2022. I was 18th lady overall". The event had a 1,500m swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run.

Jennie Page was our sole entrant recording a time of 1:16:25, just 3 minutes slower than Jenny Patience's record. Club Records

5th April - Easter Egg 10 Mile Time Trial, Steeple E21
A cold and windy morning saw a new star rider for the Southend Wheelers with Henry O'Kill not being content with taking the Easter Egg Trophy for fastest Wheelers, but he also beat Simon Alexander (Richardsons-Trek) for fastest rider overall. Elsewhere Dan Jenkins was Fastest Veteran, Jennie Page Fastest Women and Tom Womack Fastest Youth. Henry was also First on Handicap, Veterans standings will be updated later as the VTTA have only recently announced a new set of Age Standards for 2021. Results   Tables

Covid and Roadworks Cancellations
Sadly a number of events have been cancelled already due to Covid restrictions and roadworks. The ECCA 25 mile TT on Good Friday and the Festival Road Races on 1st May have been cancelled.
A number of events on the E2 have been moved or cancelled - the ECCA 12 Hour and ECCA 100 have both been cancelled whilst some events have been moved to ge nearby F2 between Cambridge and Huntingdon
