Southend Wheelers came together in style at the weekend for their annual awards dinner and presentation evening, a night dedicated to celebrating success, recognising the determination, speed, and spirit that defined the club's 2024 season. The event not only recognised the remarkable achievements of riders across various disciplines but also paid tribute to the tireless efforts of volunteers and supporters who keep the club’s wheels turning.
The evening was graced by guest of honour Luke Anderson, Cyclopark development manager, who shared his insights into the sport and personally congratulated the evening’s winners. Club President Dave Whybrow had the honour of presenting the coveted trophies and medals to this year’s standout performers.
Spotlight on the Stars of 2024
The awards night shone a well-deserved spotlight on some of the club's most impressive athletes:
Cheryl Perry claimed the Women’s Road Race Championship, showcasing her dominance and determination on the road.
Paul Hughes took home the Veterans Road Race Championship, proving that experience and endurance go hand in hand.
Bob Barber won the prestigious Jack Ivory Cup, awarded to the most successful rider in open competition.
Martin Harris was awarded the Fat Tyre Flyer award, clocking the fastest 10-mile time trial on a mountain bike.
Paul White delivered a phenomenal performance across the club’s time trial leagues, racking up five first-place finishes, four second-place and one third-place finish — a testament to his consistency and speed.
Elaine Cotton had an exceptional season, leading the women’s field with victory in the Women’s Brera Saturday Non-Aero League, alongside two second-place finishes (Women’s Saturday and Evening leagues) and third place in the Women’s Sunday League.
John-Paul Paduano emerged as the evening’s biggest winner, claiming four first-place finishes, one second, and one third in the club’s time trial leagues. His standout season earned him the esteemed title of Club Best All-Rounder (BAR) for 2024. To top it off, Paduano also lifted the Windsor Cup, awarded to the most improved rider of the season — a remarkable double triumph.
