Southend Wheelers held their annual hill climb championships up the short but challenging 604 metres of Vicarage Hill in perfect autumn conditions on Sunday morning.
First rider off Henry Jago set the mark to beat in a time of 1 min 18 secs. Four riders later John-Paul Paduano had powered his way onto the podium to take third place in a time of 1 min 41 secs. It was all over though when defending champion and favourite, Charles Langford took off from the start hard and fast. As he came into view of the spectators on the finish line he continued to maintain his effort all the way over the final few metres of the climb to take first place, finishing in a time of 1 min 12 secs.
Lorna Jones won the Women’s title in a time of 2 mins 28 secs, whilst other notable rides on the day came from Issac Phillips, Matt Jones, Matt Steel (Pronto); Chris Peugniez (unattached); Mark Thurlow (Shaftsbury CC), with three of the club's youth riders finishing in the top five places.
